Vitamin K2 for stronger bones: the foot cramp test

A couple of months ago, when my foot cramps seemed to be happening more and more frequently, my chiropractor asked me if I was taking vitamin K2. I was taking alfalfa, which turns out to provide K1, not K2.  A quick online search suggested that K2 has a role in bone metabolism - that it helps calcium to be absorbed in the bones and joints. A study of the effects of vitamin K on calcium and bone metabolism in Curr Opin Clin Nutr Metab Care. 2001 Nov;4(6):483-7 stated that "vitamin K2 menatetrenone has impressively been used to prevent further bone mineral loss and fracture risk in osteoporotic patients."  Another study  showed that vitamin K2 was linked with fewer fractures. 

Foot cramps can be a sign of insufficient calcium, magnesium or potassium. Perhaps I needed K2 to make use of the calcium supplements and foods I was careful to consume every day. So a began taking 320 mcg of K2 a day. I just realized yesterday that my foot cramps have gone away!  As much as I dislike adding any more supplements and pills to my daily diet, I think I will continue with K2.
