Hop your way toward better bones

Here's a quick video by Dr. Susan Brown, author of Better Bones, in which she shows you how to hop so that you benefit your hip bones. These are great exercises to include in your overall workout.  Or sometimes when you have a few minutes while waiting for a ride, or waiting for your dog to sniff and explore in your yard (like ours does), you can try the heel lift and drop.  Say 50 times in a row.  Every little bit counts towards stronger bones.

Collagen: Good for both bones and joints

As I mentioned in a previous post, I've been adding collagen powder  (beef gelatin) to my breakfast smoothie. After reading a few articles about the effects of collagen on bone density and arthritis, I'm even more hopeful that it will make a difference.

However, I plan to switch from the powdered gelatin to the collagen hydrolysate which does not congeal  and can be added directly to cold liquids, such as smoothies.  I realized that the gelatin I had been using needed to be soaked in cold liquid and then added to hot liquid in order to be absorbed.  LIve and learn!

Another excellent form of collagen is homemade bone broth. Simply roast a chicken,  save the bones and simmer for a day in a crock pot with water, seasoning and vegetables, and  a tablespoon or two of apple cider vinegar (for better absorption).  When the broth is chilled it will congeal like Jello.

You can read more about the  benefits of collagen in the form of bone broth or powdered collagen hydrolysate in an article here.

Now that fall is almost here, happy soup making!

Hello Readers,
I'm sorry the URL for this site was not working for about a week.  I changed domain name registrars and didn't realize that there was another step involved to reconnect the name back to the site. But it's working again.

Thanks for reading and sharing tips and discoveries about building or rebuilding stronger bones without harmful medications.

More posts to come soon!

I am a "boomer" myself, and interested in bone density because of a family history of osteoporosis. I believe that the condition is not inevitable, but it is hard to fight in our culture. As a patient, exerciser, friend, mom, citizen, and consumer, I want to share what I've learned.
